The days of owning 10 bras and wearing only 3 are over.
How many bras do you own? How many do you actually wear? Our guess is, like most women, a small percentage of however many are sitting in your lingerie drawer. We can almost guarantee that you will have at least one that rubs and irritates you (poor quality), or one that creates marks (too small in the band), perhaps one that’s straps fall off your shoulder (cup too small), and maybe one that gapes in the cup (cup too large or the style is not right for you), or one that simply does not support you and despite being what you believe to be a ‘good’ bra never makes you look or feel good in your clothes. The most common reason for this is that the under band is too big and since the under band does 85-90% of the work in your bra if it is too big the reason for wearing one in the first place is completely compromised.
We estimate that about half of our new customers are wearing the wrong size. Not only does this mean longing for the end of the day so you can go home and get changed and comfortable it also poses health issues such as neck and back pain, indents in the shoulders and rounded shoulders. More concerning to wear a bra with a wire that does not fit correctly can cause the wire to rub on breast tissue in turn causing benign lumps which are a needless worry.
At & SHE KNOWS… we firmly believe that to invest in two or three quality well fitting bras for day to day wear is all you need. Of course you can indulge in seasonal colours and styles for special occasions but in terms of great support and long lasting comfort the leap in price point from a purchase in a High Street Department Store is well worth it.
A quality well fitting bra not only gives you support and comfort it will also change the way you hold your body and carry your clothes which in turn can make you look and feel younger and slimmer!
If you are sceptical about investment in your lingerie then call in to the boutique for a free fitting and see for yourself what a difference it really can make.
We stock ranges starting from a 28 back and up to an I cup, are fully trained to the highest standards by the best providers and manufacturers to fit and advise on lingerie, care wear and mastectomy wear.
No appointment is necessary and some out of hours appointments are available. Please contact the boutique for these on 01302 719292.
We look forward to seeing you soon.
According to whichever survey you happen to read this month between 60 to 90 percent of women worldwide are wearing the wrong size bra. Whatever the true figure may be this still equates to over half of us. I cannot tell you how many ladies walk in to the boutique wearing the wrong size but what I can say is that it is definitely within this bracket. Some of the ladies we fit are so far out even though they have been advised that this is their size. They have usually been to a store that measures with tapes. Ask yourself, how can you measure volume (breast tissue) with a static instrument (tape measure)? In short, you can't.
Here are some pointers that suggest that your bra does not fit you correctly:
- Straps that dig into your shoulders = usually cup is too small
- Underwire that stabs you = cup is too small
- The dreaded 'quadraboob' or other types of spillage = cup is too small
- Cups that bunch up = cup is too big
- Back bulge = band is too small
- A band that rides up your back = band is too big
An ill-fitting bra can also cause back, neck, or shoulder pain.
Does one or more of the following apply to you?:
1. You've never been fitted properly, or for a long time
Get fitted every 12 months at an absolute minimum is what we recommend.
2. You buy the cheapest bra you can
It's worth spending money on a well fitting bra and owning two or three that are comfortable rather than ten and only wearing two of them because the others dig in or scratch.
3. You always go for the prettiest bra in the shop
A well fitting bra may not always be the sexiest BUT at & SHE KNOWS... we do stock quality heritage European brands and ranges of pretty bras that are designed for the bigger cup size as well as for everyday wear such as Empreinte, PrimaDonna and Anita.
4. You machine wash your bras
OK, this doesn't necessarily mean you’re wearing the wrong bra size but throwing your bras in the washing machine means they will lose their original shape and elasticity. Take the time to hand wash them, especially if they’re lacy and don’t you dare think about putting them in the dryer. If you want your bras to last, hang drying is best.
5. You've been wearing the same bra for too long
Even if you’re wearing the right size, bras wear out over time. Is yours stretched out to a larger band size? Do you need to go past the tightest hook? In this case you definitely need a new bra since the band does 85 to 90 percent of the work in supporting your breasts.
6. Your body has changed but not your bra
Bodies change thanks to puberty, pregnancy, birth control pills, age, stress, etc. If you've gained or lost a few pounds, get re-fitted and if your breasts get significantly bigger before or during your period, it might be worth buying a larger bra specifically for that lovely time of month.
7. Your not happy with the way your bra fits you and your body shape
Wearing the wrong size can make your breasts look bigger or smaller than they actually are. We know from experience that a well fitting bra can accentuate your shape and actually make you look better and younger!!
If any of the above sound familiar then do call in and see us for a free fitting and advice on what styles suit you the best.
We look forward to seeing you soon. X
To demonstrate exactly how hot Maryan Mehlhorn swimwear really is pop icon Kylie Minogue can be seen in the video for her new single "Sexercise", wearing a sexy swimsuit provided by the premium beachwear label. The ruched swimsuit (minute 2:17 in the official video) from the current 2014 Summer Collection was designed exclusively for Kylie Minogue in a soft nude tone. The attractive plunge-neck and fit accentuate Kylie's sexy curves – a definite high point for the MARYAN MEHLHORN brand.
Equally as hot Dominique Whittaker who is currently a finalist in the Miss Rotherham title Pageant this month and will be wearing a Maryan Mehlhorn 2014 Summer Collection range available from the boutique. The Safari one piece is a mix of animal prints finished with an eye-catching decolletage at the centre bust and together with the matching pareo and we can't wait to see the pictures.
Dominique we wish you all the very best of luck in taking that title!!

The mistake many of us make is settling for a bra that's close enough, rather than holding out for one that's perfect. How to know if you've got an ideal style and correct size? The most important consideration is comfort. This week we had an older lady in the boutique who exercised all of the below perfectly which is what prompted us to remind all of you too. Here is what to check for:
- When putting on the bra, bend over and allow your breasts to fall naturally into the cups. Stand up slowly and adjust the bra: Put a hand to each breast and raise the nipple so that it's at the centre of the cup. The centre of the bra should lie flat against the breastbone. Be sure there is no gap
- Check that the bra cups are smooth, with no wrinkles and the wires are not sitting on any of the breast tissue which may cause lumps and bumps. These may be harmless but a worry if found
- Turn to the side and look in a mirror to see whether the back of the bra rides up. If it does, this suggests the bra doesn't fit correctly. The back of the bra should rest comfortably against the middle of your back in an equilateral triangle from each shoulder
Finally, don't forget that each brand is different and you may be a D cup in one and an E in another. Also, not every style will suit every body for example, if you have recently lost weight or have simply lost some breast tissue and fullness in the cup a balconnet style may not be for you but perhaps a sweetheart shape molded cup.
If you are still unsure then call in to see us for a fitting and advice on the best style of bra to suit you.
Happy shopping!! X
Winner of the Best Sports Bra at the British Lingerie Awards 2012 and 2013
Up. Down. Sideways. When you move during exercise, so do your breasts. Again and again and again. This repetitive bouncing can stress, stretch and irreversibly damage the Coopers ligaments - the connective tissue that holds up and maintains the shape of your breasts.
Damage here can cause your breasts to sag and droop. By properly supporting your breasts during exercise, the Panache Sport bra dramatically reduces movement in all directions. Keeping your breasts in great shape.
Different sports cause your breasts to move in different ways. Panache Sport's ultimate support tackles all of them. Rather than compressing your breasts against your rib cage like most sports bras, Panache Sport individually encapsulates each one - lifting, shaping and supporting from all sides, and providing greater support than even the leading sport specific bras.
In extensive testing using the latest 3D motion and bio-mechanical tracking techniques, Panache Sport was found to reduce bounce by 83% at size 32E compared to exercising with no bra at all.
From this month onwards you are able to order the Panache Sport Bra from our website or boutique and kick off your New Years exercise plan in the best shape!
Available from a B to a H cup at the price of £37.00.
Buying lingerie as a gift for your loved one is not the easiest of shopping for a lot of men. The bottom line is it is the most intimate, personal and of course romantic choice you can make for your lady but if you get it wrong and it sends out the signal that you are not in tune with her needs and desires.
That’s why we’ve put together a guide to making the perfect purchase for men to help you through this potentially tricky task and enable you to choose with the confidence that the moment she opens the wrapping paper she’ll not just love the gift but the thought you have put into it!
The most important rule! DO NOT be tempted to buy an item of underwear that YOU think is sexy. It's pretty safe to say that her idea of fabrics and styles that make her feel sexy and special, are not the same as yours.
The first thing to do is to have a browse through her lingerie drawer, take note of her style and colour preferences. If you think she'd look good in a lacy thong, but there's no evidence of them in there, then it's safe to say she won't wear it! If all she has in her drawer are thongs and a plunge bra, then that is what she feels at her best in. Take note of the material too. She may have a preference for silk or lace so a leather basque with laces may not appeal (besides we don’t sell them!).
Check out her bra size (for example 32d) and brief size. If there are more than one size (which is inevitable as some brands can differ), go with the majority.
Once you are quite sure of her preferred style, colour and size then come and visit us and we can show you what we have and advise you on what she might prefer. We are here to help and we will even gift wrap any items for you so all you have to do is sit back and wait for the occasion to arrive!
Happy Shopping Everyone!! X
We are so pleased to announce our newest brand coming to the boutique this month with Lise Charmel joining our ever growing list of ranges.
The Soie Precieuse range is made entirely of silk inspired by the most beautiful festivals of ancient Persia and its women wearing sumptuous engraved gold jewellery. A range incorporating pieces of luxurious silk satin encrusted with Leavers lace which are both sensual and dramatic.
Deliveries start at the beginning of November so don’t forget to call in soon we don’t think it will be in stock for long!!
After the resounding success of last year’s inaugural event, we are pleased to announce that we will be repeating our Bra Bunting spectacle and Pink Thursday in our town for a second year on 17 October 2013 right in the middle of Breast Cancer Awareness month.
This year pink bins have kindly been provided by the Bawtry Retail Association and over the coming weeks ladies from Bawtry and throughout the region are encouraged to donate old or unwanted bras along with a £2 monetary donation in aid of two worthy causes, Aurora and Breast Cancer Care.
Once all the bras from the pink bins which are situated not only in the boutique but in Robinson's of Bawtry, Elite Hair, The Crown Hotel, Jones & Co Solicitors, Etc., Bawtry Gym, One Call Insurance and the Breast Care Units at both Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals are collected on Thursday 17 October they will be strung together as ‘bra bunting’ and hoisted up at around 1:30pm in Bawtry aiming to beat last year’s total of 300 bras and stretching even further in distance than last year assisted by some of the players from both Doncaster Rovers and Doncaster Belles.
Also, our fellow members of Bawtry Retail Association will join in on ‘Pink Thursday’ by decorating their shops and businesses as brightly as they can. There will also special offers, pink fizz and balloons to celebrate Pink Thursday in style.
After the event, the bras will be collected by Katie Ogley of the Junior Chamber International, who support the Flamingo Foundation. They will send any bras still in a wearable condition to ladies in Africa and any bras past their best will be weighed and the monetary value will be donated instead.
Again, we are overwhelmed already by the support (pardon the pun) of local ladies and look forward to seeing as many of you as we can!!
Whilst for those of you who already wear the PrimaDonna Deauville you will most probably agree with a statement that we read in another article online recently that the Deauville really is the best fitting bra in the world. With the Deauville being sold every two minutes somewhere in the world it’s fair to say that this may well be the truth.
Here at & SHE KNOWS… it’s the bra we rely on as the measure of your true size and from here we can determine what size you will be in other brands and ranges.
So what makes the Deauville universally so popular? Here is what;
- Molded, 3-part, underwire cups for great support and shape
- The cups feature side support panels for extra support
- Woven fabric is used on the bottom half of the cups for superior support
- Pretty embroidered, sheer mesh along the top half of the cups
- The delicate embroidery extends to the straps for a luxurious finish
- The strap adjust in the back for the perfect fit
- The molded, 3 part underwire cups have side support panels and are free of lining and padding
- Side seams are 3-1/4" tall
- Elastic straps offer moderate stretch and are 5/8" wide and adjust in the back
- Back band is 5/8" tall at closure
- Up to an E cup there is a 3-column, 2-row hook-and-eye closure
- Up to an I cup there is a 3-column, 3-row hook-and-eye closure
- The centre front is 2-1/4" tall
- If you're still not sure then call into the Boutique for a fitting and try one for yourself!
You can always browse the PrimaDonna collection at www.primadonna.eu
Well what an awful month of weather. Though please don't think it's too cold for trying on as the boutique is always toastie warm. That said we are looking forward to the sunshine and it's a good job that most of our swimwear deliveries have arrived because it seems that it's all you ladies are looking for this week.
We have some absolutely stunning beach and pool wear from Maryan Mehlhorn, Watercult, Anita and Speedo Sculpture which is both flattering and versatile and will definitely turn heads at the bar with linen trousers or a matching pareo.
In other news we're really looking forward to getting involved in the Aurora Fashion Show event this year on 16th and 17th May 2013 at the Doncaster Dome. We will be there on both evenings to see the show and will have a stall in the atrium.
Finally don't forget it's the last two days of Bawtry Fashion month and there are lots of retailers in the town taking part with offers and discounts so if you are at a loose end in the next couple of days then why not visit the town for a coffee and a wander.
See you soon.
